6 solos at Weld
+ MAISON OUVERTE #12

Dear all,

From April 9 to 12, I will have the pleasure to show a copious programme of 6 solos at Weld, including a new work in the making.

This year is both the 20th anniversary of Weld and the 10th anniversary of my marathon performance Dance is ancient. I started presenting my work at Weld in 2008, showing one work per year from the moment I moved to Sweden in 2014. As a way not to let my work and my practice lie fallow in between my yearly productions, I kept on creating new works in between, creating or visiting new contexts for them, as well as accepting commissions. I often approached them as one-off projects, but the truth is that they mostly ended up having an after life, sometimes unexpectedly.

It is hard to fathom the importance of Weld’s continuous support in the development of my work. Enormous for sure. As a way to honour such an important collaboration, in the frame of this year of anniversaries, Anna Koch and I picked 6 solos never presented at Weld.

I hope to see you there!

Frédéric Gies
Artistic director of Dance is ancient.

Dans (Sverige)
*Solo template version (premiär)

The last work presented on April 12 is the solo template for a group piece that will premiere later this year at Dansens hus. Dans (Sverige) - solo template version. The premises of this new work lie in two backward movements: looking back into the prolific dance materials of the 35 pieces I created since I moved to Sweden and looking at the few traces left of Maison de Fous (Dråhuset), a 1920 work by Les Ballets Suédois. While the piece looks into the past and excavates the uncanny kinship between my work and Maison de Fous, it also takes a sharp look at the present, positioning itself against the fetishization of national origins and making use of the figure of the “Fou” as a subversive, irreverent force destabilizing oppressive power structures.
